GOLD COAST MERCHANDISE
“We Proudly Lead the Way”

National Service was introduced in 1951 for all 18 year old men. Over 250,000 young men served in the Army, Navy and Air Force until 1959. It was reintroduced in 1965 for the Army only, this time the period was for 2 years and was based on a birthday Ballot.
Fifty percent of these young men, aged 20 years old, went to Vietnam. There were 212 young National Service soldiers killed in action and 1479 wounded during that conflict.
The National Servicemen’s Association was formed in Toowoomba, Queensland in 1987 by the late Barry Vicary. The growth was slow until early 1995 when it rapidly grew in Queensland to nearly 3000 members. Branches are now formed in all states with a total membership of approximately 12,000 Australia wide.
The Gold Coast North Branch was formed in late 1995 by three Gold Coast members:
John Danks, Len Cuttler and Hugh Williams. It now boasts of around 200 Members.
The Gold Coast North Branch meets bi-monthly with a bi-monthly newsletter with a distribution of over 200 copies Australia wide.
30th July, Induction Day, will be held at the Nerang RSL Cenotaph, Nerang Street, Nerang; this commences at 10.30am for a 11.00am Service.
In July 2001, the Gold Coast hosted the 50th Anniversary of the first call-up of Nashos in 1951.

(A second Branch was created on the Gold Coast in late 2001 – Gold Coast – South Branch – to primarily service members in the southern areas of the coast from Tallebudgera Creek to Coolangatta – see their separate Web Page).
